This
well researched high action, historical presentation is a sequel to the
authors' first book, PONDER THE PATH (still available at $12.95). This
writer reviewed the first book. He found that it was one of the best examples
of fast moving history he had ever read. The first book dealt with all aspects
of the fur trade from 1808 until 1830. And the central character was William
Sublette.
BEHOLD THE SHINING
MOUNTAINS covers the years 1830 until 1836. Included in this all encompassing
saga is the opening of the Oregon Trail along with the emergence of missionary
forces in the far West, the escapades of William Drummond Stewart, the
emergence of Andrew Jackson and his influence as President as well as the test
of will between the powerful Astors and Sublette in
the race for peltry. Into this boiling caldron the reader is thrust into
eternal conflicts with the Blackfeet Indians to bring some quite enjoyable
reading. The result is that BEHOLD THE SHINING MOUNTAINS will be of vital
interest to a wide range of readers. It is an ideal selection for anyone
involved in living history activities because of the ideas for contemporary
conversation and the authors' success in applying meat and bone to historical
characters.
A truly massive index of
personal names gives graphic evidence to the wide range of historical figures
and the part they played in the saga of the development of the American West.
Included is a massive 223 volume bibliography for additional reading. And this
reviewer gives such a book the highest possible recommendation for anyone
interested in the subject. It is a welcome change from the dry history
presentations that one comes across all too often. A great deal of credit goes
to the authors for their success in bringing the many characters to life.
